The third annual Freezin’ for a Reason took place at the BA Golf and Athletic Club on Wednesday Jan. 25, 2018, which wasn’t as freezing a day as they imagined it to be with a relatively warm temperature of around 55 degrees.

“A week ago when I went to check out the pool, there was a layer of ice across the top because it was so cold,” Assistant Athletic Director Melenda Knight said. “But when the day that was chosen to take the plunge came around, the weather was perfect for it.”

Freezin’ for a Reason is an annual fundraiser for the Special Olympics program, which helps them pay for equipment and gear that any athlete would need that they may not be able to provide funds for themselves.

“The Freezin’ for a Reason fundraiser provides money for food, transportation, lodging, and uniforms for the special olympians to attend the 49th annual Oklahoma Special Olympics Summer Games in Stillwater, May 16-18,” said Knight. “We have raised over $5,000 so far, and donations are still coming in.”

Most people jump into the chilly pool because they want to do something bigger than themselves. The special olympics program helps guarantee that every athlete in broken arrow has equal opportunity for success.

“It’s amazing to see the Broken Arrow Athletic Department showing so much support for the Special Olympians,” said Katie Fly, special education teacher and BAPS Special Olympics coach. “Freezin’ for a Reason allows our athletes access to uniforms, warmups, transportation, and lodging just as any other Broken Arrow athlete would have.”

The Tigettes team’s support stood out among the others as they were the only team to show their support with full participation.

“The Tigettes all did it together because it is for a really good cause,” senior Tigette Hailee Tilton said. “It makes it easier to jump into a cold pool when you have a group of friends there for moral support.”

If you missed the Freezin’ for a Reason event and didn’t get to take the plunge, you can still make a donation for the Special Olympics program. Although this event takes place annually, don’t wait until next year to make a difference.
