In the past 10 years,  headlines have been reporting the tragic stories of a young person’s suicide death linked in some way to bullying (physical, verbal, or online) have become regrettably common.  There is so much pain due to this chain reaction. It doesn’t just affect the victim. It affects the family, peers, communities and societies as a whole. In result, the increasing national outcry to “do something” about it.

“Strong people stand up for themselves, but the strongest stand up for others.”

There are 4 steps to Stop and prevent bullying.

#1. Pay attention.

There are many signs of bullying. Unexplained injuries, lost or destroyed personal items, changes in eating habits, and avoidance of school or other social activities are the most common. Some students don’t show exhibit signs, or will do anything to hide it. That is why the first step is so important. Engage in students on a basis and open-ended questions that encourage conversation.

When you pay attention you can save a life.  You show them that someone cares enough.  It may not seem not like much to you, but it could mean the world to someone else. It helps them “cope” with their problems.

#2.Intervening is another thing that helps.

When you intervene it could help turn the tables. Even bystanders can help. Doesn’t matter whether you have a small or large role. Make sure you don’t do it on the spot. Go tell a teacher. Or someone you trust. Bullying is a no-tolerance zone in most schools but somehow they still do and it is not ok.

#3.  Listen and don’t prejudge.

There are 6 types/ steps of listening. As taught at leadership retreat for BA Highschool students.

  1. Pretending to listen, multitasking.
  2. Barely listening (zoning off)
  3. Listening a little, but waiting for your turn to talk.
  4. Listening, but judging
  5. Listening and giving advice (without being asked)
  6. Listening fully and understanding (you must understand to be understood)

#4.  Take a stand.

Everyone needs to take a stand. Everyone’s voice counts and will help lower the suicide  & bulling rate. It makes a difference. Not only to the kid who is getting picked on, but the community, the nation, maybe the world. You can make a difference. So take a stand. Change a life.  Thank you to everyone who cares enough to stop and change other people’s lives. Now let’s come together and help make a difference! GO BA!
