The newspaper class, taught by Ashley Spencer, is an elective focused on writing stories about things going on at the school and is beneficial to the yearbook. In this class students have to complete stories each month that could be about a school event, a feature on a student or teacher, reviews of movies, BuzzFeed type lists and articles, and more. After they finish their stories, they post them on the bahspulse.com.

“I ran a newspaper class when I taught at Edmond North High School before coming here, so I was familiar with the process,” Spencer said. “I enjoyed doing it, and I like having a class that is a smaller group solely focused on writing. Students who enjoy writing will enjoy newspaper. It looks great on college applications, and the teamwork/leadership skills can help students in whatever career they decide to pursue.”

This is a smaller class with only 8 students in the classroom. It is very different from the yearbook classes that Spencer also teaches.

Senior Hailey Livingston joined newspaper this year to help build her resume for college.

“I like getting to cover the events that happen at the high school, because I enjoy writing and getting the insight on what is happening,” Livingston said. “This class is really fun, I love all the people in the class and Mrs. Spencer. I would definitely join again if I could.”

Senior Payton Shreve has been in newspaper for 2 years. Mrs. Spencer was her sophomore English teacher and suggested it would be a good idea for her to join newspaper.

“My favorite part of being in newspaper is getting to write about events around the school and seeing my friends every day,” Shreve said. “I made a lot of new friends in newspaper and grew closer to old friends. I would join again because I loved being in newspaper and I am so sad to be leaving next year. I would recommend this class to anyone who likes to write. It is really cool to see your hard work pay off and have others read your work.”

To join newspaper visit Mrs. Spencer in room MN106 at any time during the day. Students can also go to bahspulse.com to look at the stories the students post and get an idea of what type of stuff they write about.
