In the 2016 Presidential Election, former First Lady Hilary Clinton lost in the final vote to current president Donald Trump. This was the closest a woman has ever been to becoming president of the United States. Barack Obama, who served two terms as president, was the first black president. This was huge for the Black Community and minorities everywhere. I think a woman or minority would promote change because they feel more passionately about it and know what it is like to be looked down upon.
When Clinton ran for office, the Women’s Movement was jumpstarted. People were excited to see what a woman would do in office. Many people hit the voting centers with hopes that a woman in office would solve many problems facing women today. The same goes for minorities.
Although Clinton lost to Trump, women were moved and praised her for her courage and her campaign. This led people to hope for a woman president in hopes of changing some societal issues many women face, including the women’s pay gap and criticism at work.
Obama gave many speeches regarding oppression and racism in this country. People were empowered by his words and, due to his status, he had a large platform to discuss the issues facing many Americans today. In 2008, he gave a speech where he stated one of the issues he was going to address during his time as president would be.
“This was one of the tasks we set forth at the beginning of this presidential campaign – to continue the long march of those who came before us, a march for a more just, more equal, more free, more caring and more prosperous America,” Obama said. “I chose to run for president at this moment in history because I believe deeply that we cannot solve the challenges of our time unless we solve them together.”
Many women and minorities have announced their intent to run in the 2020 Presidential Election, hoping to spark change. Although it is against the law, discrimination against women and minorities, especially in large corporations, is present, this is commonly called the Glass Ceiling Effect. The concept is that as they, a woman or minority, climb the latter and rise higher within a company, but they will eventually become stagnant, due to their gender or race.
I, by no means, am saying that a Caucasian man cannot enact change but most of them have not experienced this type of maltreatment. Under President George H. W. Bush, Congress passed the Glass Ceiling Act of 1991 which created the Glass Ceiling Commission. Their purpose is to explore how businesses promote people and what qualifications they look for. They also studied the wage gap and established ways for companies to be rewarded for hiring a wide variety of people.
Recently, 28 women on the US Women’s Soccer team filed lawsuits against the US Soccer Federation for unequal pay between the men’s team and the women’s team. This is also a local issue, at my place of work, a male assistant makes $12.38 an hour while a woman, of the same status, makes $10.34.
Several changes have been made, moving this country closer to total equality. If a woman or minority became president in the upcoming election, I think these changes could be made faster and more efficiently.
