BAXC has crossed the finish line

Calendars have been flipped to November and that means the cross country season has come to a close. The Tigers just ran in the state tournament this past weekend and the ceremonial end-of-season banquet took place on Tuesday.

Edmond Santa Fe was the host for the Oklahoma state tournament this year, with hundreds of runners all traveling to central Oklahoma for the races. Broken Arrow went into the meet confident after a strong push at the end of the season. Broken Arrow’s top runner Collin Carpenter took an impressive thirtieth place finish at the meet and Blake McConkay finished in the top 70 respectfully. Carpenter has been a seasoned runner for BA the past four years and was consistent for them all year.

“Now that the season is over I am sad but I am happy that I had a such a great team,” said Carpenter. “The team stayed together all year by having a lot of fun and encouraging each other all year.”

Looking ahead, the BA runners have the potential to be a force in the upcoming years. Many young runners, including McConkay, are only going to improve before next year, and Broken Arrow has the promise and poise that is so essential in cross country. Junior Josh Peterson is excited for his senior season and another year with this group of guys.

“A lot of the freshman coming up have great potential,” said Peterson. “Over the season, I really got to know a lot of the new teammates and it’s really cool to see them strive to be their best.”

This year was another solid one for the Tigers, but more importantly, the team came together as a unit, something not often seen in cross country teams. Head coach Stanton has combined a competitive atmosphere with strong team chemistry in order to get the most out his athletes. Being able to compete out of state was an experience that proved valuable to the runners and coaches.

“The special part of the season was being able to travel out of state to Missouri and Arkansas to run against teams from different areas,” Stanton said.

Next up for the runners is track season, which will begin in the spring.
