Show choir competition season is quickly approaching. Tiger Rhythm and Tiger Mystique have been working on their sets since the end of September to get them ready to perform. Tiger Rhythm is the school’s coed show choir while Tiger Mystique is the women’s show choir. Soon they will be debuting their sets at their first competition in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Junior Ellie Whisnant is in her first year in Tiger Mystique show choir. One way she prepares herself for competitions is by rehearsing constantly, even when she’s not in rehearsals. She runs through the dance in her head, she dances in her room, and she practices her facial expressions in the mirror.
“My favorite part about choir is how much my self-esteem has grown since joining it, and I love the family I’m now a part of,” Whisnant said.
Junior Katherine Miller practices every day with Tiger Mystique to get the show down pat.
“The most difficult part about competition is not over-hyping on stage,” Miller said. “My favorite part is traveling to and from the destination with my friends.
Before every competition Miller gets together with her choir while they all hold hands and hum their ballad. They do this to calm the nerves, prepare to get on stage, and to grow closer to each other.
Senior Trenton Smothermon is a tenor one in Tiger Rhythm. Before performing Smothermon engages in a game with the rest of his show choir. In this game they all hold hands and go around grabbing the next person’s hand tighter. They do this to focus and calm down before going on stage.
“I love the moment before the music starts, everything is silent and the anticipation of the performance gives me the drive to give it my all,” Smothermon said.
Both choirs will be leaving Friday, Jan. 27, and will be returning Sunday, Jan. 29. Keep up with how they’re doing at competitions by following the show choir Twitter, @BAshowchoirs.
