Junior Sareena Barker has been swimming since she was 6 years old. This is her third year on the swim team, and she has been competitively swimming for 5 years.

“My favorite part about swimming is spending time with my teammates at practice and going to the swim meets,” Barker said.

Barker’s sister, Briana, graduated 4 years ago and was also on the high school swim team. Briana holds 5 out of 8 of the records for the girls. She has the records to the 50 free individual, 100 free individual, 200 free individual, 500 free individual and 100 breast individual.

Barker is often compared to her sister and what she accomplished on the swim team. Being compared to her sister made her work hard in swim.

“When people compare me to my sister it makes me want to try harder and show that I can do what she did,” Barker said. “It makes me more dedicated because it gives me a goal.”

Last year at state Barker swam in the 200 medley relay, 400 free relay, and the 500 free individual. She and her teammates placed sixth in the 200 medley relay.

“She is a great competitor, and she is one of those people that brings her A-game every meet, every time,” coach Casey Beck said. “She is so dedicated and is always ready to practice and give 110%.”

Barker is not just dedicated to swimming, but to her teammates. The team has said she makes them feel welcome with her bright personality.

“Sareena’s bubbly personality always brightens my day, and I can always count on her to laugh at my cheesy jokes that no one else thinks is funny,” junior Sammy Robinson said.

The hard work Barker does on the team does not go unnoticed by her coach or teammates. Barker inspires her teammates with her hard work and they push themselves to be better swimmers.

“Sareena has definitely grown in her time on the team,” Beck said. “She has become more outgoing and less shy around people she doesn’t know. She also has started to really think about what she wants for her future.”

She is ready to start racing again and can not wait for the season to start. Swim season starts in late October.
