Cross country is hoping to take state this year as a team. This is going to be difficult but they are ready to put in the hard work to get there.

“This season I’m looking forward to being healthy and being competitive at the state level,” senior Blake McConkay said. “Our team is stronger than it has been in the last few years and I would like to see us qualify and be successful as a team at state.”

At a cross country meet the runners compete against people from other schools.  Most races are 5 kilometers long, but they can vary in length and difficulty.

“The hardest course is the one at Oneta,” senior Dayren Seegren said. “The easiest one is at Missouri University.”

Cross country is a very competitive sport. Every runner is trying to drop time and run their best race.

“My goal is to drop my time by a minute and a half,” senior Ashley Wyatt said. “I’ve been training the hardest I’ve ever trained, focusing on my goals and keeping to them.”

Joining the cross country team not only teaches students how to improve running but also brings people together.

“My involvement in cross country has brought me some of my closest friends and best memories of high school,” McConkay said. “I also love the feeling of success that comes after months of hard training.”

The family dynamic of the team is something that teammates enjoy.

“I like that it feels like a family, you do everything together,” Wyatt said. “They see you at your worst and see you at your best.”

They had their first meet of the season in Tahlequah followed by another at Oneta Ridge. For their next meets the top ten are going to Joplin, MO for a meet at Missouri Southern University on Sept 15, while the rest of the team will be in Sand Springs at Case Community Center for a meet.
